We therefore chose to conduct make up tests by drawing the skull onto her face in a hybrid mix of many that we saw on Google images such as -
and
We didn't want the skull to look overly real or scary, as the concept of the music video isn't to scare or intimidate, but rather to connote the feeling that a part of the girl feels as though it has died after an event in her life (which is left for the audience to decide on for themselves). It is supposed to reflect her sadness and loneliness as her appearance seems to distance her from others and singles her out (other people don't have skull faces).
We therefore chose not to go for the overly 'pretty' skull make-up in the first picture but also chose not to go for the more realistic representation on the second image. We also chose to only use make up on half of her face - so that it would both be more time efficient and also allow us to hide her skull make up in some shots by only filming one side of her face, and then making it more hard hitting when the other side is revealed.
We came up with:
We chose a nose style more reminiscent of the first image shown, while the eye make up was more inspired by the second image, as it was less 'pretty' and more 'serious'. We also ended up improvising with the teeth and jaw, as we didn't like the teeth in model images.
